Surveillance Camera?Installation Waterloo: Why Install a Surveillance System?

Want to keep your home and family safe? There are many benefits of installing surveillance cameras. Right now is a great time to purchase a surveillance system as the options are nearly endless! Surveillance cameras now?come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. Here are some reasons why installing a surveillance system may be right for you, your home, and your family:

Prevent break-ins

Although surveillance cameras cannot, of course, physically prevent a break-in, many burglars choose the easiest house on the block. In many cases, obvious surveillance cameras act as a great deterrent. This is especially true if the burglar is someone from your own neighbourhood, as they would likely be recognized immediately on camera. Click here to read more about how burglars case a house.

Provide evidence in the case of a break-in

If the sight of a camera does not stop potential burglars, it may help to identify them later on and hopefully prevent more break-ins by the same burglars in the future.

It is Easy to Choose Your Perfect Camera

With so many options now available, it’s easy to choose the right surveillance camera for you, your family, and your needs. There is a camera for every budget, and each surveillance system comes with its own pros and cons. You can add a camera to your existing surveillance system, or choose to just have one outdoor camera. Some cameras offer continuous streaming, others take short video clips. It’s important to do your research to help choose which camera is best for you.

Helps Prevent Fires and Gas Problems

Depending on your security system and provider, you can also recieve alerts when your smoke or carbon monoxide detector goes off. Some providers even allow you to set up your system in a way that automatically alerts authorities if your alarms/detectors are going off! This is a great way to keep your home and family safe.

Recent Surveillance Disputes – Ontario

Unfortunately, neighbour disputes are not uncommon and frequently revolve around either surveillance or fencing. As security cameras become more commonplace, some people feel as though their privacy is compromised. Here are some recent incidents of neighbour disputes in Ontario – and what lessons we can learn from each one.

Hamilton, Ontario – November 2014

In this?Hamilton Spectator article,?When Personal Security Clashes With Privacy, we learn about Hamilton resident Dan Page who?put up surveillance cameras after his home was broken into. Though Page himself has not received any complaints about his cameras, that is not that case for other Hamilton residents.

“As residential security cameras become more commonplace, so are concerns they’re peering into private lives. The city says it fields about three complaints a month from residents about cameras infringing on privacy.”
Teviah Moro, Hamilton Spectator

Unlike many other cities in Ontario, Hamilton does have specific bylaws governing surveillance camera use and placement. Neighbours who feel uncomfortable with cameras can report these cameras and have them inspected to see if they follow the rules.

Lessons Learned:?It is important to know and understand your city’s bylaws. If there are no applicable bylaws in your area, try to be respectful of your?neighbours’ privacy as much as possible. Even with good intentions, your neighbours?may feel uncomfortable if they suspect you are pointing surveillance cameras at them or their property. Be respectful, and talk to your neighbours about possible concerns.

Forest Hill, Ontario – May 2014

In The Star’s May 2014 article, we learn about a major, messy neighbour dispute in Forest Hill, Ontario. A dispute between neighbours, initially involving a “dog feces incident” became completely out of control, involving 24/7 surveillance. Among the many problems these two neighbours faced was the issue of surveillance. When Neighbour A decided to point two of their cameras directly at Neighbour B’s house, Neighbour B retaliated by doing the same thing, something Neighbour A really did not like.

This messy situation soon became a legal issue, as the two?neighbours?eventually went to court over their long-lasting dispute. Although the surveillance cameras were part of the issue, they were also used in court as evidence and proved that both parties had acted in some very questionable ways.

Lessons Learned: Once again, know and understand your city’s bylaws. It appears there are no applicable bylaws for the Forst Hill area. However, it’s always important to respect the privacy of others. It’s also important to remember that footage captured on surveillance cameras can be used in court, which is just another reason why it’s important to think before you act.

Toronto, Ontario – February 2009

Surveillance is not the only issue neighbours face. Fencing disputes are extremely common problems among?neighbours, but they usually do not end up costing $100,000, like reported in The Star’s article on this Toronto, Ontario case. Neighbours decided to take the law into their own hands by removing a disputed, misplaced fence when a fencing/property dispute remained unresolved. The neighbours who removed the fence eventually had to pay approximately $100,000 in legal fees and damages.

Lessons learned:?Understanding your own property lines, rights, restrictions, and fencing bylaws in your area can help stop a major and potentially expensive dispute before it begins. Common courtesy and respect go a long way. Having open communication with your neighbours whenever possible is key to avoiding and preventing conflict down the road.
